Detroit Police said one of their officers was shot and wounded during an investigation into a home burglary on the West Side.
The police chief said that a policeman working as a volunteer in the police force was killed by a bullet in the neck fired from a rifle, while another was seriously wounded in the leg.
The rest of the police officers responded by shooting and wounding the unknown gunman. The suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital, in critical condition.
“It’s a tragic day for the Detroit police, as they descended the stairs, the suspect, who was armed with a rifle, opened fire on the police,” Craig said.
Statistics announced by the FBI revealed that 55 policemen were shot dead during the performance of duty during the past year.
