12 people killed in Virginia Beach shooting

Twelve people were killed in a shooting at Virginia Beach Town Hall.

Police said the suspect was also killed and several others wounded.

Police said the suspect was Dwayne Craddock, 40.

Police say Craddock opened fire randomly around 4 pm.

Police Chief James Cervera said that Craddock opened fire and fired “indiscriminately” at the workers inside the facility’s operations building.

Cervera said police returned fire, killing Craddock. He said Craddock was a longtime employee of the city’s Public Works Department. One of the people who was shot was a police officer.

Governor Ralph Northam made a statement

This is a terrifying day for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The tragic Virginia Beach shooting has wrecked us. I’m in Virginia Beach with law enforcement and Mayor Dyer, as I monitor the situation and offer the state’s full support.

My deepest condolences and prayers to the people who left the house this morning and will not return tonight, as well as those who were injured in this tragedy.

This is indescribable and meaningless violence. I commend local and state law enforcement, first responders, medical teams, and all of the other people who acted quickly to respond to this situation. My thoughts remain with the victims and their families. “

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan also issued a statement:

“Shocked and terrified by this horrific shooting in Virginia Beach. Our prayers are with the loved ones of the victims, all of the injured, and with first responders. Maryland stands ready to provide whatever support is needed.”
