Authorities confirmed that a security guard and four other people were killed and two others wounded in a shooting attack that began in Chicago and ended when police in Evanston shot dead a suspect during an exchange of fire.
At approximately 5:30 PM, officers were called to CVS Pharmacy on Block 100 of Asbury Street to report a shooting. When the officers arrived, the suspect ran into IHOP and took a woman hostage.
Police said the woman was subsequently shot by the suspect and had since been taken to a local hospital. The suspect then got involved in a shootout with the officers, according to Evanston Police Chief Demetros Cook.
The suspect was shot by the police and taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Evanston police said in a tweet on Twitter that they had found a firearm at the scene.
