US Congressional Police confirmed that an officer named Brian Secnick died of wounds sustained while confronting President Donald Trump’s supporters’ storming of the Congress building.
The police said in a statement: “The officer was responding to the riots, at the Congress headquarters and was wounded during a physical clash with the protesters.”
The statement indicated that Seknik returned to his unit, where he felt unwell, and was transferred to the hospital before he died there at a later time.
The police had previously denied press reports about the death of a police officer after the clashes in the Congress.
With the death of the officer, the death toll from the storming of the Capitol rose to 5, including 4 protesters.
