The CHP says nine people died in a head-on crash.
The accident happened around 8:00 pm. On State Road 33 south of Sutter Street.
When the CHP reached the crash site, they found two vehicles involved in a head-on crash.
Officers find one person dead in a 2013 Dodge SUV and say the Ford F-150 truck was set ablaze with an unknown number of people inside.
After the fire was put out, they found eight bodies inside.
CHP says the accident occurred when 28-year-old Daniel Luna from Avinal, driving a 2013 Dodge in the opposite direction, allowed the vehicle to drift on the shoulder of dirt, over-correct and crash into a Ford.
Investigators say the Ford F150 was equipped with only six seat belts and should not carry eight people.
A Ford truck was driven by an adult woman. The seven passengers were children, believed to be between the ages of 6 and 15.
The Fresno County Mayor’s Office says children from two different families are related to each other.
Due to the nature of collision and fire, positive identification will not occur for some time.
It is not known at this time whether alcohol or drugs are a contributing factor.
