A deputy sheriff said that one person was killed and another wounded in a church shooting in East Texas.
The sergeant said the suspect who escaped from Starrville Methodist Church in Winona after the shooting was arrested. Larry Christian of the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.
Christian said MPs have been called into the church over news of gunfire around 9:20 am. He said that two people were found with gunshot wounds.
He said there were no services running when the shooting occurred. He was not immediately able to provide more details about what happened or who were involved, saying that investigators were still gathering information.
“I don’t think it will be any kind of hate drive or anything else,” Christian said.
Starville Methodist representatives were not immediately available for comment. The Starrville Methodist was built in 1853, according to the Texas State Historical Association.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued the following statement about the shooting
“Our hearts go out to the victims and the families of those killed or injured in this terrible tragedy. I am grateful to the law enforcement officers who arrested the suspect, and ask the people of Texas to join me and Cecilia in praying for those affected by this horrific tragedy. Shooting. Winona is a small town located 100 miles east of Dallas.
