A Gary man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping an 8-year-old girl he had known from birth.
Donovan Wilson, 29, continued to maintain his innocence as a Lake County judge sentenced him.
The judge said Wilson, who was convicted of child molestation in November, should register as a lifelong sex offender and should serve more than 83% of his sentence, as he is considered a credit-bound offender.
Lake Tara Villarreal County Attorney said Wilson knew the girl from birth and was in a position he trusted, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.
Villarreal said the girl’s mother caught Wilson raping her daughter in February at the baby’s home in Gary.
“You will never forget what happened to her,” said Villarreal, who asked the judge to sentence Wilson to 40 years in prison.
Defense attorney Rosan Ivanovic had requested a 20-year prison sentence for her client. She said Wilson did not have a serious criminal history prior to his arrest, and he has five children.
“It was very difficult for his children, as they couldn’t see him,” she said.
