SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A woman and a child died and two other juveniles were injured in an assault in Springfield, police said.
A suspect was arrested shortly after officers were called to the home in west Springfield, police Lt. Robert Byrne said.
Officers went to the home after being notified of an assault in progress, Byrne said. Two girls, ages 7 and 14, who came out of the house told officers other people were inside, he said.
Law enforcement officers entered the home and found the woman and a juvenile male dead.
Byrne said the victims had injuries consistent with being stabbed, The Springfield-News Leader reported.
One of the children who escaped is being treated for life-threatening injuries while the other suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Witnesses told police a man with a knife was seen running from the home. Officers were able to arrest the suspect a few blocks from the home, Byrne said.
The suspect’s relationship to the victims is unknown, Police also are working to establish a motive for the attacks.
