Authorities say the pilot was killed in a small plane crash on a mountain slope in the San Bernardino National Forest east of Los Angeles.

San Bernardino County Mayor Jodi Miller said the unknown man was the only person aboard the Piper PE 28 Cherokee.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the single-engine plane was flying from Upland to Riverside when it was reported missing at around 5 a.m. The wreckage was less than an hour later on the lower wings of Mount Baldy north of Upland.

Television news showed that the small plane crashed and crashed.
