Authorities said a man was shot and killed during a drug raid at a suburban Atlanta apartment complex.
Members of the Marietta Cobb Smyrna Organized Crime Squad and the SWAT Team of the Cobb County Police Office were executing a pre-dawn drug search warrant near Smyrna, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said, when an officer shot a man in the apartment. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The authorities told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that it is unclear whether the Rapid Intervention Team member intentionally fired his rifle, saying that they are still investigating this question.
The man’s name was not revealed until the authorities informed the relatives. The Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy.
None of the officers were injured.
The Cobb County Prosecutor will decide whether to continue to bring criminal charges against anyone involved after GBI completes its investigation.
It is the 92nd time that GBI has been asked to investigate an officer who shot someone this year, according to the agency. There were 84 such shootings in 2019.
