A North Carolina police officer is killed in a nighttime shootout

Authorities said a North Carolina police officer was killed in a shootout while answering an entry-and-enter call.

Mount Holly Car Wash and Arcade was one of several officers who responded to a call at the Mount Holly Car Wash and Arcade around 3:30 am, according to a press release from Charlotte Mecklenburg Police.

Authorities said Herndon was injured during an exchange of fire between the suspected officers and the police, who broke into and entered. Herndon and the suspect were transferred to Carumont Regional Medical Center, but it is not clear when Herndon died.

Police charged Joshua Tyler Funk, 24, of Mount Holly, with first-degree murder. According to the court clerk, Funk is imprisoned without bail and has not been assigned a lawyer.
