A prison bus skidded off a Texas highway and collided with a moving train, killing 10 people.
Ictor County Sheriff Mark Donaldson said the bus was carrying 12 inmates from Abilene to El Paso along Interstate 20 when it slipped off the road as it was traveling over train tracks. The bus hit the side of a moving train, killing eight prisoners and two corrections officers.
An officer and four prisoners were transferred to the Odessa Medical Center Hospital in serious or critical condition. No one on the train – which was carrying no passengers – was injured.
“It’s as bad as you can imagine. In 32 years, it’s as bad as anything I’ve seen,” DPS commander Kavin Tenney said of the scene.
“With sad hearts, we regret the loss of the dead and wounded this morning in a tragic accident. Their loved ones will be in our hearts and in our prayers,” said Brad Livingston, executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. statement.
It is not known why the van skid, although Texas Department of Public Safety Oscar Villarreal speculated it may have been icy.
