Officials said the US land borders with Canada and Mexico will remain closed to non-essential travel until at least January 21.

US and Canadian officials stated that the decision was taken to raise the number of cases of Coronavirus infection to record numbers across the country.

The decision means that it is up to President-elect Joe Biden’s administration to decide when to lift restrictions that were first imposed in March to limit the spread of the virus.

The US Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, Chad Wolf, said the most recent, one-month extension is aimed at “continuing to prevent the spread of Covid.”

Canadian Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair confirmed the extension, and posted a tweet on Twitter in which he said, “Our decisions will continue to be based on the best public health advice available to keep Canadians safe.”
