A pilot was killed in a single-engine plane crash on a street outside a small airport in a Los Angeles suburb, authorities said.
Firefighters had to avoid collapsing power lines while dousing the flames that engulfed the wreckage, and at least two parked cars and plants on the front lawn of a house across a street at one end of the Whitman Airport runway.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said only the pilot was on board when the Cessna 172 crashed on the final approach to the runway.
Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prang said the only occupant of the plane died and that no one was injured.
The pilot was not immediately identified.
City utility workers have turned off power to the area due to electrical hazards.
The accident will be investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, which will determine the likely cause.
Whitman, which serves small aircraft, is located in the Baquima area about 15 miles northwest of the city center.
