Police said two passengers in a speeding car died when the car collided with a palm tree in La Jolla, and the driver was suspected of being drunk at the time of the accident.
San Diego Police Officer Dino Delimitros said the accident occurred at 3:16 a.m. when the driver of a Nissan Altima was speeding west on Route 1000 Torre Pines.
The officer said the 26-year-old driving the Altima turned left at 7500 Girard Ave. He lost control of the car and collided with a palm tree.
Delimitros said two passengers, aged 19 and 21, were seriously injured and died at the scene.
The officer said that the injured driver had been taken to hospital and would be detained on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
