Two people died in a fire accident involving nine vehicles on I-24 East in southern Nashville.

The accident was reported shortly before 8:00 pm. In the eastern lanes of I-24 near Antioch Pike.

According to TDOT, all eastbound travel lanes have been closed. One of the westbound lanes is closed so crews can assist the scene.

A Nashville Fire Department spokesman said nine cars were involved. The National Defense Authority said two people were killed at the scene. Three others were taken to local hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Traffic maps show heavy congestion in both directions. Drivers are advised to follow an alternative route.

It is not clear at this time what caused the accident.
