One suspect was on the run after several people were injured in a “live shooting incident” at a suburban shopping center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin .
The shooting occurred outside Macy’s store in the Mayfield Mall in Wawatosa, a suburb of Milwaukee of 47,000 people, according to local authorities.
Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber said in a statement that seven adults and a teenager were taken to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries was not known.
Weber said the shooter left the scene when emergency responders arrived, and remained at large.
Police described him as a white man in his 20s or 30s.
Dennis McBride, the mayor of Wauwatosa, said in a statement earlier on Friday that none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. He added that 75 policemen were at the scene.
Live TV footage on ABC’s local subsidiary WISN12 showed dozens of brightly lit police cars outside Macy’s, and a video posted on Twitter showed paramedics picking up people from the mall on stretchers.
Several customers interviewed by local media said that the shoppers and mall employees were locked inside the mall but were safe. One of them said that her sister – a mall employee – heard about 15 shots.
