A 9-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of his mother at their home in southern Michigan, according to court documents.
Saint Joseph County Attorney John McDonough said the woman was found early Monday morning in the town of Faun River. The town of Fawn River is located about 160 miles west to southwest of Detroit.
The boy was also accused of using a firearm while committing a felony. Documents filed Tuesday in St. Joseph County Circuit Court show the woman was shot by a rifle.
Joseph Lancaster said, “My wife and I, when we heard that the woman was shot, we both looked at the other and said, ‘I bet it’s him,’ the little boy, because I have grandchildren. Age and I have the youngest. He was standing in a row of trees there, pointing his BB gun at him and shooting at them. “
Lancaster also said he would see the boy play alone outside – but not with the other kids.
The Associated Press did not identify the victim because doing so would identify the suspect the event. As of Tuesday, the boy was undergoing a psychological evaluation at a state-run juvenile facility, according to County Leader Bradley Balk.
It is not clear if he was accused as an adult or a juvenile. The authorities did not disclose the circumstances of the killing or details of the reason for the accusation of the child.
