Authorities said a 4-year-old boy in a Washington state apartment found a pistol packed under a mattress and used it to shoot his pregnant mother in the face.
The 27-year-old woman and her boyfriend were watching TV in bed on Saturday when their son found the gun between the mattress and box-spring, the spokesman for the King’s County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Ryan Abbott said.
“He accidentally shot his mother in the face,” Abbott said.
The woman, eight months pregnant, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Abbott said she was transferred to another hospital on Sunday in a state of improvement.
Abbott said the boy’s father had informed MPs that he had borrowed the rifle to protect it. He said that the pistol had not been reported and was not recorded.
Under a new state law, gun owners could face criminal charges for failing to store the weapon safely, but Abbott indicated that this will not take effect until July.
This case is under investigation.
“We remind anyone who carries a gun, kids see them as toys,” Abbott said. “The biggest tragic lesson we’re learning here is to please turn off your weapons so they don’t get used by mistake for the wrong reason.”
