Authorities reported that three people were killed when an SUV crashed off Route 78 near El Camino Country Club, collided with a fence and a signal post and caught fire.
For unknown reasons, a westbound-bound Mitsubishi Outlander veered over the northern edge of the expressway and skid onto the east bridge of El Camino Real in Oceanside shortly after 2 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Marc Latolip, CHP Oceanside Public Affairs Officer, said passengers ended up trapped in the burning debris and died at the scene.
The driver of the car has been identified as a 43-year-old Escondido man; The front seat passenger was a 56-year-old Escondido man; The left rear passenger has not been publicly identified. Authorities said only the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
The spokesman said authorities had closed one lane in the nearby Vista Glen Drive to allow emergency vehicles to pass.
