A Dallas woman faces charges after police said she found her 6-year-old grandson shackled in a hut.
Authorities received information about the boy Sunday night.
When the police went home, 53-year-old Esmeralda Lyra told them that the child was with his mother.
However, a man living in the back of the property directed them to the shed.
Lyra and her resident friend Jose Balderas face criminal charges of endangering a child.
The boy’s grandmother told the police he had been in the shed once as punishment. Lyra’s friend told the police that the 6-year-old had been in the shed for at least two weeks as punishment since he had been stealing food.
CBS Dallas reported that the boy explained to the officers that the alleged abuse began when he “was out of school because of this coronavirus thing.”
