Police said a 14-year-old girl was raped at the Covid-19 treatment center in India.
Parvinder Singh, deputy commissioner of Delhi Police, told CNN that the alleged rapist was a 19-year-old patient at the center in the capital, New Delhi.
“The two did not know each other before,” Singh said. “The rape occurred in an isolated area of the center and a 20-year-old man, a friend of the 19-year-old girl, helped with the crime.”
The suspect and the alleged victim had tested positive for the Coronavirus and were patients at the 10,000-bed Sardar Patel Covid Care Center in Chattarpur, south of the city.
The police recorded the incident, when the girl’s family reported the alleged attack.
The girl claimed that the 20-year-old recorded the rape on his phone. “We are investigating this as well as the charge of rape,” Singh added.
The alleged incident was registered as a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Crimes Act (POCSO).
Singh told CNN that the two suspects were arrested while in a government hospital under judicial custody because they were being treated for the Coronavirus.
He added that the girl is receiving treatment in a different government hospital.
India has one of the highest cases of coronavirus in the world, with more than 1.28 million people infected with the virus, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University – third after the United States, which has more than 4 million cases, and Brazil, with more than 2.28 million.
On Friday morning India set a new record of 49,311 new cases of the virus within 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and over the past two days, the country has seen a spike, with just over 95,000 new cases recorded. .
But the numbers may actually be higher: A recent study by India’s National Center for Disease Control found that nearly one in four residents in New Delhi might be infected, indicating that actual infections in the city are more prevalent than the number of confirmed cases. .
