Police said a 26-year-old man was taken to hospital after he was shot while sitting in his car near a park in the Southcrest neighborhood.

The shooting was reported shortly after 11:25. San Diego Police Officer John Patel said Tuesday at Southcrest Community Park, 4149 Newton Ave. Between 40 and 43rd Streets.

Patel said the victim, a 26-year-old man, was sitting in his parked car with a 19-year-old man in the front passenger seat when two men walked into the car and started pounding windows.

The officer said that the two men then opened fire while the victim was still inside the car and hit him at least once in his left thigh and left wrist, adding that 12 shell casings were found at the scene.

Patel said the victim was taken to hospital to receive treatment for his injuries, which he did not believe could threaten his life. The passenger was not injured.

The suspect vehicle – described only as a white pickup truck – was seen fleeing the park after the shooting, but detailed descriptions of the suspects were not immediately available.
