Sheriff officials said that a 3-year-old boy from Texas died after being shot in the chest.
In a statement, the Montgomery County sheriff’s office said they were called to a home in Porter, Texas, at around 4:15 pm, as a family gathered to celebrate the 3-year-old’s birthday.
The call was a sign of a well-being check, but after he got home, investigators learned that the 3-year-old had been shot.
Reportedly, family members and friends who had gathered at the house told officials that they were playing a card game when they heard the sound of a gun exploding.
After carrying out some investigations, officials said the child discovered the firearm after it fell from the pocket of a family member.
Officials reported taking the child to a nearby fire station, but there was pronounced death.
The police department said in the statement: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of this tragic accident.”
