Police said a former Pittsburgh State University basketball player was shot dead outside the Wichita Sports Stadium where a youth soccer match was being played.
The death of 31-year-old Markel Nolan stemmed from an ongoing feud between Nolan and the suspect and had nothing to do with the game, Sgt. Dan Hardy said.
The shooting took place around 10 pm. Inside the Stryker sports complex near the parking lot there, but outside the stadium where the match was being played.
Hardy said that Nolan and the suspect got into an argument, the suspect drew a pistol, and shot Nolan. The police were searching for the suspect
Nolin played football at Butler Community College before training basketball at Seward County Community College and Pittsburgh, his former coach Ryan Stock told the Wichita Eagle. He was the 2013 MIAA Defensive Player of the Year in his first season in Pittsburgh.
Police Captain Kevin Cochendorfer said more than 500 people were at the scene at the time of the shooting, causing chaos.
The league that organized the game, Capital Sports Institute, canceled the remainder of the 2020 youth football season after the shooting.
