Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said one of two Houston police officers died after being shot at an apartment complex in southwestern Houston.

The dead officer was identified as Sgt. Harold Preston, 41-year-old division veteran. He was preparing to retire this year.

Acevedo said Preston had been shot in the head more than once. He was also wounded in the shoulder area, and a bullet sank in his spine.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner asked Houston to raise his family in prayer, including his 23-year-old daughter.

“The more he was a cop the better human being.” Hear the high praise HPD Chief Acevedo gave for the sergeant who fell.

Houston, Texas – Two Houston police officers were killed after being shot in an apartment complex Tuesday morning in southwest Houston, HPD chief Art Acevedo said.

The dead officer was identified as Sgt. Harold Preston, 41-year-old division veteran. He was preparing to retire this year.

Acevedo said Preston had been shot in the head more than once. He was also wounded in the shoulder area, and a bullet sank in his spine.

Turner identified the second officer who shot Courtney Waller. He was injured in the arm and he is expected to survive. Waller was with strength for three years

The shooting occurred around 7:55 a.m. at Richmond Manor Apartments in Building 2600 in Holly Hall and El Mondo, near Interstate 288.

Acevedo said the officers were responding to a domestic violence case. When Preston, Waller and another officer arrived at the scene, the suspect’s estranged wife, 51-year-old Elmer Manzano, told them she was moving and wanted to retrieve the items from the apartment.
