A tow truck driver was killed helping a stranded driver after another vehicle collided with his truck along Interstate 99 in Delano, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP Sgt. Michael Phillips said the accident happened shortly before 10 pm. South of Wollomes Street in the northern lanes of Interstate 99. Phillips said the red Mazda SUV veered off the slow lane and collided with the tow truck that was on the right shoulder while the truck driver Monday assisted a driver of a stranded car.
The truck driver was standing next to the truck at the time of the accident and was injured and killed. The CHP says the truck driver who was killed was a 22-year-old man from Tulare. It will be recognized by the Kern County office.
The SUV driver sustained minor injuries and was arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance. The driver has been held in Kern County Jail for a DUI felony and a felony car murder.
According to CHP, there is no evidence that any other compounds are involved.
The lanes were closed for several hours but have since reopened.
