Illinois State Police said a woman was killed and a child was seriously injured in a crash on the Eisenhower Expressway in the western suburbs.
Police said the accident involved one car that overturned and caught fire at around 4:20 am west of Harlem Avenue.
Police said a woman in the car was killed and declared dead at the scene. The authorities have not revealed her identity.
Police said an eight-year-old boy was seriously injured and taken to Loyola Hospital in critical condition.
All Eisenhower corridors in Harlem were closed during a police investigation. All eastbound traffic has been diverted from Interstate 290 to Des Plains Street, with the shutdown expected to continue until 8:45 a.m.
The cause of the accident is unknown.
