A 6-year-old girl and a man died in a house fire in northwest Indiana.

The fire broke out at around 4:45 a.m. at Block 500 of Maryland Avenue in Gary, according to Gary Fire Division vice president Mark Everett.

Firefighters found the child’s grandmother outside, and indicated that two others were still on the first floor of the two-story house, he said.

Everett said the crews are fighting thick smoke and flames, and have entered the back of the house. The firefighters found the girl in the living room, took her outside, and began life-saving efforts. She was taken to Northlake Methodist Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Everett said that a 21-year-old man found in a first-floor bedroom died at the scene. The grandmother was airlifted to a hospital in Chicago to receive treatment for severe respiratory distress.

Everett said residents of the second floor of the duplex were safely evacuated before the firefighters arrived.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Lake County coroner’s office did not disclose details of the deaths.
