A mother of four children was killed during a two car crash near New Palestine, according to the Hancock County Police Department.
Shortly after 6 a.m., the responders were called to the 3500 area west of US 52, about one mile east of New Palestine.
They arrived to find a 2001 Kia Optima and a four-door Chevrolet passenger car were involved in a direct accident.
Authorities say evidence at the scene and discussions with both drivers indicate that Kia was heading east on a US Flying 52 when it shifted to the westbound Chevrolet lane. The Chevrolet driver tried to stop and avoid collision but was unable to, according to HCSD.
Catherine Weaver, 30, from New Palestine, was killed in the accident. Officials say she left behind four children, ages 5 to 13.
A Chevrolet driver – a 40-year-old new Palestinian man – was taken to Methodist Hospital with multiple broken bones, including one in his right leg. The mayor’s office says his injuries are not life threatening.
The Kia driver – a 26-year-old Greenfield man – was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital with several broken bones and a trauma to his leg. The authorities say his injuries are not life threatening.
US 52 was shut down for approximately three hours while officers from the Hancock County Fatal Crash Team investigate.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
