42 elderly people died in a nursing home in Virginia, due to infection with the emerging coronavirus, in one of the worst tragedies of the virus in the United States, with more deaths expected in the coming period.
The medical director of the facility, Dr. James Wright, said that at least 127 of the 163 inmates had tested positive for the virus in recent weeks.
He pointed out that during the past three days, two deaths were recorded at the home, and he added that it was difficult … we were surprised at how quickly the virus spread.
And he considered that “it is a battle that we sometimes feel we are losing. It is a battle that we have to fight every day and night, seven days a week.”
Not only the elderly were affected, but at least 35 of the home’s employees were injured.
Wright pointed out that the outbreak of the epidemic had exacerbated the staff shortage, with some refusing to go to work for fear of contracting the virus.
The situation has also been made worse by an acute shortage of personal protective equipment such as medical masks and customized clothing.
And he added, we did our best, what this virus does is find a sensitive population and it spreads quickly among them without being detected.
