Austin Police Department has arrested a 17-year-old boy for shooting a toddler while purchasing a gun.
Evan Hernandez faces a fierce attack with a deadly weapon for his own shooting
According to a sworn arrest certificate, a man agreed to meet with Hernandez to purchase a handgun at a home on Purple Sage Drive in Central East Austin.
A woman stayed with the man with her two children in the car while purchasing the weapon. At some point during the interaction, the woman told interrogators, “He reached out his hand across his body and into his pocket as if he was pulling a pistol.”
In response, the man punched Hernandez, knocked him to the ground and ran to his car. Then Hernandez got up on the ground, pointed a gun at the rear of the car where the children were sitting and fired several bullets, according to the affidavit.
Police said a two-year-old girl, who was sitting in the back of the car, was hit in the leg and foot. The family headed away and called 911 at dd’s Discounts car park on Ed Bluestein Boulevard.
Paramedics took the baby to hospital in critical, but not expected, life-threatening condition, according to Austin Travis County EMS. Doctors removed the bullet, emptied the swelling in her foot, and provided her with stitches and antibiotics to control the infection.
Police said that at the scene of the crime, officers found six bullet casings consistent with the bullet that doctors pulled from the girl’s foot.
