A 29-year-old firefighter died in a southern suburb of the Netherlands after a diving exercise in Kankakee.
Village officials said Thornton’s Dylan Cunningham was participating in scuba diving training in Kankakee. The accident happened in Haigh Quarry, according to the Cook County Medical Examination.
Cunningham passed away at 10:40 pm. at Northwestern Hospital, the medical examiner office said.
An early parade began from Northwestern Memorial Hospital to the Cook County Medical Examination Office in Cunningham’s honor.
South Holland village manager J. Winsma made a statement later and confirmed that Cunningham had died after a scuba diving exercise. He said Cunningham had been working full time with the department since February 2018 but had worked part time starting in 2011.
Cunningham has also been a member of the National Guard since 2012.
Winsma described him as “a very special young man”.
Winsma said the cause of the accident was under investigation, but he did not provide any further details about the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
“We know you have many questions, and so do we,” said Winsma. “We ask that you keep Dylan’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”
Cunningham was engaged and expecting his first child.
South Holland officials had a flag at half mast and banners could also be seen.
