Authorities said a 52-year-old woman was killed when the sports car she was traveling in fell onto a bridge and crashed into a tree trunk in the La Brisa area of Spring Valley.
Travis Jarrow, a California Highway Patrol officer, said the accident happened at around 6:50 a.m. on Paradise Valley Road east of Worthington Street.
A 49-year-old Chula Vista man was driving a Hyundai Santa Fe in 2004 heading west on Paradise Valley Road when, for unknown reasons, the SUV drove over the northern pier and crossed a chain fence before descending on a dirt bridge and crashing, Jarrow said, Tree trunk.
The officer said that the passenger was apparently lying in the backseat area of the car, without a seat belt, and was ejected from the car.
Jarrow said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has been withheld pending notification to the family.
The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment, Jarrow said, adding that he did not believe poisoning was a factor in the accident.
