A US official said that a letter addressed to the White House address containing a substance that turned out to be the poisonous ricin gas was intercepted.
The message, believed to be sent from Canada, was intercepted at a government mail center before it reached the White House.
In response to a question about media reports, the FBI said that experts from the Bureau, the US Secret Service and the Postal Parcel Inspection Service are examining a suspicious letter that arrived at a US government postal facility, and at the present time there is no specific threat to public safety.
The White House and the Secret Service declined to comment.
