An 11-year-old boy died after his stepfather shot him while hunting deer on private property in the town of Clay, County Saint Clare.

Clay Town Police said the shooting took place around 8 pm. In complex 6300 from Benoit Road.

Clay Town Police said the 11-year-old was in the woods with his family, looking for deer, when witnesses heard gunshots and saw the boy on the ground. The boy was injured on a tour launched by his 40-year-old stepfather.

According to the police, the boy was being treated by family members when the police arrived and CPR was performed. While they were there, the police said, another bullet was fired.

Police said the girl’s mother shot her in the hand while trying to unload a pistol, and it detonated by mistake.

The boy was taken to McLaren Hospital in Macomb, where he was later pronounced dead.

His stepfather is currently in custody, and the St. Clair County Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case.

The boy is the second fishing-related death in eastern Michigan. On Saturday, a 14-year-old boy was killed when he apparently fell asleep in a corn field and was run over by a reaper.
