Authorities said a shooting at a shopping mall in northern Indiana killed one person and prompted shoppers to flee in search of safety.
Saint Joseph’s County coroner, Michael McGann, said a person was killed in the shooting around 3 p.m. At the University Park Mall in Mishawaka. He did not disclose further details or the identity of the dead.
The police also did not release information about the suspect being shot.
The shooting prompted the evacuation of the mall in the city, located east of South Bend. The officers were deployed around the mall for hours afterward.
Videos posted on social media showed people running out of the mall in the seconds after the shooting.
Renee Dominic, 44, told the South Bend Tribune that she was in a playground at a mall with her husband and two children when she heard gunfire.
“I heard a bang and saw people running,” she said. “I thought it might have been a hurricane.”
Dominic said that a shoe store employee directed people to hide inside, and she and her family joined about 35 others who ran into a room in the back of the store before they later left.
