Chicago police said two people were killed and at least four others injured after an exchange of fire outside a gathering in the city’s South Austin neighborhood.
According to the police, a group had gathered at Block 100 in North Pine at around 2:06 a.m. when the altercation occurred. During that melee, a man pulled out his weapon and began shooting the group, hitting at least five people.
A 47-year-old woman was shot in the face and chest, and was transferred to Struger Hospital in critical condition. The police announced her death later.
Another victim, a 35-year-old man, was hit by a bullet in the chest and arm, and he was also pronounced dead at Struger Hospital.
Three other victims were taken to district hospitals in good condition, including a 38-year-old man who was injured in the back. Police said that a 32-year-old woman was injured in her right lower leg, and an unknown man was wounded in the right thigh.
During the shooting, another person responded to the gunman, wounding him in the stomach. He was taken to Struger Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Officers found a weapon at the scene, according to police, and an investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
