A 5-year-old boy died after a stone countertop fell on it last week during a wedding in suburban Oak Brook.
The boy, from Glenview, was with his family at a reception at the Drake Hotel, 2301 York Road, according to a statement from Oak Brook Police.
Police said he was lying on a sofa table, which was placed behind a sofa, in an open area where other children were sitting. When the other kids left the area, the boy began to slide off the table, building up with a granite surface. Police said he grabbed the ledge with his fingers to slow his descent as he slid back.
Police said that when he got off the table, the table fell on his head, causing serious injury.
Paramedics responded at 10 pm. The emergency doctor already in place helped to administer CPR to the child.
Police said the boy was taken to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The DuPage County Coroner’s Office did not disclose details of the death.
