Jacksonville police said a young girl died and a man was injured when a fight escalated into a pre-dawn shootout near Westside Elementary School.
The sergeant said the girl, whose name and age were not released, died at the double-shooting scene around 1 a.m. outside a house in Building 7800 on South Reno Drive near Hillman Drive on the West Side. Adam Blaine.
Blaine said the man, who was not identified, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The girl is the 126th murder victim this year in Jacksonville. Times-Union unofficial records show there were 112 last year over the same period.
A shootout occurred across the street from Jacksonville Heights Elementary School. Blaine said it appeared to be the result of an altercation between two groups of people outside the home. Several people pulled out of the guns and shot back and forth between groups.
He said the police arrested several people for questioning. Investigators believed that the individuals were known to each other, and that the shooting was a lone accident.
