Police said a person was shot dead in Portland, Oregon, as a large convoy of President Donald Trump’s supporters and protesters of “Black Lives Matter” clashed on the streets.
It was not clear if the shooting was related to the clashes that erupted when protesters encountered a convoy of about 600 cars in the city center. An AP piece worker noticed that police medics were working on the body of the victim, who looked like a white man.
The Portland Police Office said: “Portland Police officers heard gunfire from the southeastern area of Third Avenue and southwest of Alder Street. They responded and identified the victim who had been shot in the chest. The doctors responded and determined the victim was dead.” The current situation.
Portland has been the site of nightly protests for more than three months since George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis by police. Hundreds have been arrested by local and federal law enforcement authorities, and prior to the shooting, police made several arrests and advised residents to avoid the city center.
The chaotic scene came two days after Trump declared Portland a liberal city plagued by violence in a speech he gave to the Republican National Convention as part of his campaign theme “Law and Order.” The convoy indicated, in succession, that Trump supporters had gathered in the city.
The Trump Caravan gathered earlier in the day at a nearby mall and drove as a group to the heart of Portland. Upon reaching the city, protesters tried to stop them by standing in the street and cutting bridges.
Videos from the scene showed sporadic fighting, as well as Trump supporters shooting paintballs at opponents and using bear spray as counter-demonstrators threw objects at Trump’s convoy.
“There have been some cases of violence between protesters and anti-demonstrators,” Portland Police said on Twitter. Officers intervened and arrested in some cases. “
Black Lives Matter demonstrations usually target police and federal buildings. Some protesters called for cuts to police budgets while the city’s mayor and some members of the black community denounced the violence, saying it was counter-productive.
The fires that broke out outside the Police Syndicate building, which was a frequent site of protests, prompted police to declare riots.
Police said in a statement that an accelerator was used to light a gasket and other rubble that was placed on the door of the Portland Police Association building. At least one garbage container was set on fire on a nearby street.
The uproar came after a sit-in in the lobby of the Portland Mayor Building.
