Authorities said two people were shot dead and the suspected gunman was also killed Saturday afternoon in a Michigan compound.
According to WXYZ, family members said the gunman killed his 67-year-old mother and 33-year-old sister at Cherry Hill Apartments in Dearborn Heights. Michigan State Police said the man then shot officers at the scene and was killed when police returned fire. The Detroit Free Press reported that there were no further injuries.
Police confirmed on Saturday evening that the shooting started around 2:30 in the afternoon. As a local incident, WDIV reported.
While the police have not officially named the victims, family members have identified them as Hazel Walker, 67, and Danny Walker, 33, WXYZ reported. The TV station reported that the gunman and the victims were living in the same apartment.
“I was talking to (Hazel) before this all happened,” Matti Dunlap, the woman’s sister, told WXYZ. “She was a part of me. I miss her.”
“Danny was the love of everyone’s life. Everyone she met touched their hearts.”
The Free Press reported that Bachis McCullough, 30, a neighbor of the apartment complex, said he was with his two daughters, ages 5 and 7, when he saw the gunman carrying an AK-47 on the back porch of the apartment.
“It was like something out of a movie,” McCullough told the newspaper. “You don’t see anything like this in Dearborn Heights.” “I’m from the eastern side. I was more worried about my children, they are everything to me.”
McCullough told WDIV he tried to persuade the gunman to drop his weapon.
“I look and say, ‘Come on, man. “My kids are behind the door,” McCullough told the TV station. “Listen, man, we don’t want to do this.”
The Free Press reported that officers from Dearborn Heights, Dearborn, Inkster and State Police were at the site. Police said there was no threat at present, but officers would remain in the area overnight.
