Police said a bystander was shot dead in Austin after fighting broke out between 60 people who fled the Gulf Coast from Hurricane Laura.
Police said two groups of people who left Port Arthur and Beaumont on the southeast coast of Texas fought a major battle in downtown Austin Street at around 12:30 a.m. Someone shot a woman.
Police said the woman was homeless and did not participate in the quarrel. She was taken to a hospital in Austin where she was pronounced dead shortly after one in the morning.
The police withheld the woman’s identity and said that the woman had not been arrested. Homicide investigators and crime scene professionals interviewed witnesses and searched the scene for a video of the shooting.
The Travis County Medical Examination Office will conduct an autopsy on the deceased woman, who has not been identified pending notification of the next of kin.
