A man fights for his life after a Kenosha Police Department police officer shot him in Wisconsin.
A video clip purported to be of the shooting and posted to Facebook, shows at least two police officers tracking the man with pulled weapons as he walks from the passenger side in a gray car to the driver’s side. When the man opened the car door and tried to enter, an officer was seen grabbing him by the shirt. The officer points his rifle at the man while holding the man’s shirt. He heard at least seven gunshots, and the man appeared to limp in the car, and he horned the car.
Police said they were called to the address to deal with local unrest, but it was not clear who called or what happened before the video began.
CNN is seeking additional information from the police.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers identified the victim as Jacob Blake in a statement released shortly after the accident. Evers said that Blake was seriously injured multiple times.
“Tonight, Jacob Blake was shot in the back several times, in broad daylight, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Cathy and I joined his family, friends, and neighbors in hopes that my grandfather would not succumb to his injuries. While we don’t have all the details yet, what we know for sure is Not the first black man or black person to be shot, injured, or ruthlessly killed by law enforcement personnel in our state or country, Evers said in his statement.
The Kenosha Police Department said in a statement that an officer was involved in the shooting that took place when they were responding to a local incident at 2800 of 40th Street at 5:11 pm.
According to the police, officers immediately began to provide assistance and the person was taken via Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee, in critical condition.
After the shooting, Kenosha Police requested the Kenosha Police Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol to hand over the scene of the accident to an agency other than Kenosha Police, the statement said. The Criminal Investigation Division of the Wisconsin Department of Justice will investigate this shooting incident.
Attorney Benjamin Kramp told CNN that the Blake family had reached out to him for help. Cramp said that Blake’s three sons were in the car when he was hit.
They have seen a policeman shoot their father. They will be traumatized forever. We cannot allow officers to violate their duty to protect us. Our children deserve better! Crump said in a post on Twitter.
