Gun violence in Philadelphia is escalating at a record pace as police investigate more shootings. Since 2 pm, 11 people have been shot, including three children.
Police say one man was killed and four others were wounded after a gunman in a white truck opened fire on a group of people.
It happened around 4 pm. On 30th Street and Cumberland in the Strawberry Mansion section of town.
Action News has learned that five victims, between the ages of 15 and 24, were wounded in the shooting.
Police say an 18-year-old man was shot twice in the head. He later died in hospital.
A 15-year-old boy was shot in the right leg. He is listed in critical condition at the district hospital.
A 24-year-old man and a 20 and 21-year-old man were injured in the shooting. There was no immediate word on the conditions of the three victims.
Neighbor Kwale Hunton says that given the current state of gun violence in Philadelphia, this is now normal.
“You can’t go anywhere, not even walk to work anymore because you’re afraid because you think you’ll be killed,” Hunton said.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Daniel Ottlaw called for more prosecutions at all levels.
“A lot of these people that we see are repeat criminality and this isn’t the first time they’ve shot someone. We all in the criminal justice system have to make sure we pay attention to these cases.”
The shooting is the latest in a string of crimes.
Two children were killed in a separate shooting earlier in the day, and at least 13 people were injured in a series of shootings.
