Authorities are investigating after a man was shot dead during a confrontation with Broward Sharif’s deputies in Dania Beach.
Representatives were dispatched to the 5400 Block from Southwest 32nd Terrace, in the Oakridge neighborhood, at approximately 7:22 p.m.
BSO said it responded to a home in that area for a domestic violence call. Rachel Renee Mercon said Joshua Gay was her boyfriend, and they got into an argument.
“They should have talked to him and made him drop this weapon,” said Mercon. “There is no reason to shoot him.”
According to MPs, the woman told MPs that her boyfriend grabbed a gun and took off.
“The call was about leaving the house and a gun,” said Mercon. He did not put his hands on anyone. He just left the house with my rifle. Now, I know he wasn’t supposed to carry my rifle, and he went to my safe and took my rifle, but he didn’t do anything with that gun before he left this house, and it must be the domestic violence call because someone got their hands on someone, not because someone left Home with a gun. “
While searching for Jay, they receive a second shooting call along 2500 Street of Stirling Street, just west of Interstate 95.
When he located Jay, investigators said, a confrontation erupted. Then a deputy fired from their weapon.
Jay was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“I just want people to know he was kind-hearted, the sweetest person ever, and he wouldn’t hurt anyone,” said Mercon.
Representatives closed Sterling Road in both directions as they worked on the scene.
“It should be noted that a firearm was found at the scene, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be the lead investigator in this investigation,” BSO spokesperson Donald Pritchard said.
The representatives concerned were granted administrative leave while the investigation was being conducted.
