Authorities said an 8-year-old girl was shot dead during a birthday party in the backyard of a teenager at a home in Ohio.
Akron Police said several shots were fired shortly before midnight in the Sherbondy Hill neighborhood. Police said the 8-year-old was found injured and taken to Akron Children’s Hospital, where she later died.
Authorities have identified the girl as Michaela Beckett, a student at the Portage Path Community Learning Center, according to a spokesperson for Akron Public Schools. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office is planning an autopsy.
Willie Walker, 62, told the Akron Bacon-Journal that he was hosting an outdoor birthday party for his 15-year-old grandson in his backyard when the shooting happened. Walker, who has lived in the house for 32 years, said he was inside when the shooting started.
He said, “All hell broke out.” “I don’t know what the hell happened.”
Walker said that apparently three or four people came to the property and started shooting family members and friends who were at the party. He said that police officers found multiple shell casings at the scene.
He said, “I don’t know how many shells they took.” “Many of them.”
There were no immediate reports of arrests.
