Ohio authorities investigating the death of an 18-month-old girl have charged the child’s mother’s friend with premeditated murder.
According to internet records, Devon Mallory, 31, is with a million dollar bond after his arrest this week.
WOIO and Cleveland.com reported that Mallory is accused of murdering the daughter of his girlfriend, Sophia Echevaria, who died late last month.
Sophia died on July 30, five days after the alleged attack.
According to the reports, which cited Mallory’s arrest report, the suspect was caring for Sophia on July 25 with two other children.
Sophia’s mother was at work at the time.
Police claimed Mallory called his girlfriend around 5 p.m. That evening, Sophia said that Sophia was unconscious and breathing abnormally. He also called 911, and the ambulance stopped at the house upon the arrival of Sophia’s mother.
Mallory allegedly told police that Sophia was playing with older children when she fell and hit her head with a Nerf pistol, according to reports. He said he was not in the room when the alleged accident happened.
However, Mallory’s story does not appear to match Sophia’s autopsy results.
The medical examiner ruled her death as a murder from severe head trauma.
According to reports, Sophia suffered from severe brain hemorrhage. Doctors determined her injuries were not accidental, and may have been the result of a brutal attack.
Police claimed Mallory was being rough with Sophia, disciplining her whenever she cried.
In February, Mallory also pleaded guilty to assault after being accused of pushing the mother of his 3-year-old son on a ladder, according to Cleveland.com. The woman who was climbing the stairs on crutches after a quarrel broke her wrist. Mallory was sentenced to a year in prison on probation in this case.
At this point, Mallory has yet to file an appeal for the only charge against him. Online records fail to determine whether he has retained legal counsel.
