Police in North Carolina have arrested a 25-year-old Wilson man, claiming he shot his 5-year-old neighbor in the head while the boy was playing outside with his sisters.
The Wilson Times, Laurinburg Exchange and WGHP all reported that the US Marshal’s Carolina Regional Task Force had arrested Darius Nathaniel Sessums on Monday, and charged him with murder in connection with the death of Canon Henant.
The shooting took place around 5:33 pm.
According to the police, Cannon was outside on his bike, along with his sister, who are 8 and 7. Authorities claim that Sissoms came out of his house and walked towards Cannon, pointing a gun at the boy’s head and pulling the trigger.
A neighbor told the police that he had dinner with Cannon’s father the night before the shooting.
A neighbor claimed that Sissoms had returned home after the fatal shooting, and believed the suspect was playing with the children.
The neighbor said, “For a second, I thought,“ It can’t happen. ”“ People don’t run across the street and kill children. ”
Sissom allegedly fled the area in a 2019 Toyota Corolla. Police found him on Monday night, inside a house in Goldsboro.
Cannon’s mother, Bonnie Waddell, told the Wilson Times that the boy was due to start kindergarten on Monday and had just learned how to write his name.
She said, “He was just a loving child.”
The motive of the shooting is still unknown.
The GoFundMe campaign is set up to help the Cannon family pay for his funeral.
Sessoms has not brought a case before a judge, and has no registered attorney who can comment on his behalf.
It is being held without support.
