A woman was killed in a clear shark attack off the coast of Maine, a rare event that was once recorded in the state by an unjustified shark.
A Marine Marine patrol said a witness saw the woman swimming off the shore of Bailey Island, when she was apparently wounded by a shark attack.
Marine Patrol said that two cyclists helped the person reach the beach and an ambulance provided more assistance, but her death was announced at the scene.
James Solikowski, a New England shark expert, said only one unprovoked shark attack had been recorded in Maine. Solikovsky, who is looking at Arizona State University, said it is possible that the shark mistook someone for food
The US Marine Corps urges swimmers and boats to be careful near Bailey Island and avoid swimming near school fish or seals.
